Pathology Department

General introduction

Pathology is an integral part of the clinical support services at the Trust and performs tests which support care and treatment in hospital and community settings. The department is divided into four sections:

• Biochemistry (including Immunology and point of care testing)
• Haematology and Blood Transfusion
• Histopathology and Cytology
• Microbiology (including virology and molecular)

From the 1 April 2026, Warrington and Halton Hospitals pathology services now operate under the management of Mersey West Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Trust. Pathology services remain sited at Warrington and Halton Hospitals. It is important to note there are no changes to how you access tests or receive results- services will continue as normal.

How to access this service

Warrington Laboratory core opening hours Monday to Friday

Biochemistry, 9am to 5.30pm
Haematology and Blood Transfusion, 8.45am to 5.15pm
Histopathology and Cytology, 9am to 5pm
Microbiology, 8.50am to 5.20pm

Warrington Laboratory - service outside core hours

Biochemistry, Haematology / Blood Transfusion and Microbiology provide a 24-hour, seven day a week service
There is no service provision for Histopathology and Cytology outside core hours

Halton Laboratory core opening hours Monday to Friday

9am to 5.30pm (please note the latest time for receipt of specimens for urgent processing in Halton is 4.45pm)
There is no onsite service at Halton on weekends or outside of core hours
