General introduction

An endoscopy is a test that helps doctors look inside your body. A thin, flexible tube with a camera is used to take pictures and videos of organs and other parts of the body.

We provide endoscopy services at both Warrington and Halton hospitals.

Warrington Endoscopy Department

The Warrington Endoscopy Department is on the first floor of the Appleton Wing. It provides care for both inpatients and outpatients.

The department offers:

  • gastroscopy
  • colonoscopy
  • flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • feeding tube insertion (PEG and NGT)
  • endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • polyp removal and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)
  • oesophageal, pyloric and colonic stent insertion
  • oesophageal dilatation
  • bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
  • endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)

Halton Endoscopy Department

The Halton Endoscopy Department is on the first floor of the Nightingale Building, just off the main corridor at Halton Hospital.

The department offers:

  • gastroscopy
  • colonoscopy
  • flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • polyp removal and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)
  • oesophageal dilatation
How to access this service

Patients can be referred to the Endoscopy Service from their GP or the consultant team who is overseeing their care.

Useful information

An endoscopy is a procedure that uses a thin, flexible tube with a light and small camera to look inside your body.

The camera sends images to a screen, so your healthcare team can check for problems and look for signs of disease, including cancer.

Endoscopy can be used to diagnose and treat conditions in the digestive system. Some treatments that once needed surgery can now be carried out during an endoscopy. These include:

  • stopping bleeding in the digestive system
  • widening narrowed areas of the digestive tract
  • treating some cancers
  • helping to relieve symptoms caused by cancer

Most endoscopy procedures are carried out as day cases, so you can usually go home the same day.

You may have a local anaesthetic to numb part of your body or sedation to help you relax during the procedure.

Having an endoscopy instead of surgery can offer several benefits. These include:

  • a lower risk of complications
  • a shorter hospital stay
  • a lower risk of getting an infection while in hospital
