Information for parents - Warrington School Health

Young people in secondary school can see a school nurse at the school nurse drop‑in if they have any physical health need or an emotional health and wellbeing concern.

Confidentiality and consent

As a service, we encourage young people to talk to their parents or carers about any health issues that are worrying them.

We do offer a confidential service to young people, but there may be times when the school nurse needs to share information. This depends on the young person’s age, level of understanding and whether there are any safeguarding concerns.

Gillick competence and Fraser guidelines

The service follows Gillick competence, which helps determine whether a child under 16 is able to consent to their own medical treatment without parental permission or knowledge.

We always encourage young people to involve their parents, but sometimes we must decide whether a child is mature enough to make decisions themselves. In these situations, we assess whether they are ‘Gillick competent’ or meet the ‘Fraser guidelines’.

These guidelines help balance a child’s rights and wishes with our responsibility to keep them safe from harm.

Acess the Gillick competency and Fraser guidelines on the Care Quality Commission website.
