Children’s Occupational Therapy – Warrington

General introduction

Our children's occupational therapists provide assessments, advice and intervention to help children and young people develop the skills they need for everyday activities.

Occupational therapists support babies, infants and young people to grow, learn, socialise and play, enabling them to thrive and reach their full potential.

The Community Children’s Occupational Therapy Team work with children and young people who have difficulty taking part in the activities they need and want to do every day. These activities are known as ‘occupations.’

Examples of occupations

  • self‑care tasks - dressing, bathing, using cutlery
  • education - handwriting, scissor skills, organising work
  • play and leisure - hobbies, sports and recreational activities

An occupational therapist may suggest alternative ways of completing tasks, provide advice on new approaches and techniques, or recommend environmental changes, such as equipment or adaptations, to support fuller participation in daily life.

The occupational therapy service works in partnership with parents and carers, and with other services involved in supporting the child or young person, including schools and nursery settings.

Appointment information

An initial assessment may take between 60 and 90 minutes.

Sometimes more than one assessment is needed depending on your child’s needs. Assessments may take place in clinic, at home or in school.

It would be beneficial for your child to wear comfortable clothing and supportive footwear so that your occupational therapist can complete a full assessment.

If your child uses glasses, equipment or splints, please bring these with you.

Children should attend clinic appointments with a parent or carer. To help reduce distractions, we kindly ask that siblings are not brought along where possible.

If you know in advance that you are unable to attend, please contact the Children’s Occupational Therapy Department.

Non‑attendance may result in your child being discharged from the occupational therapy service.

If you have any information that you would like to discuss without your child present, you can contact us on the number provided in the 'Contact us' section and ask to speak to an occupational therapist.
