Children’s Community Paediatric Medical Services (doctors and consultants) – Warrington

General introduction

Community paediatricians are doctors specially trained in the assessment, diagnosis and management of a range of conditions, including:

  • neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • neurodisability, including cerebral palsy
  • chromosomal conditions such as Down's syndrome
  • learning difficulties

When support is provided early, it can significantly improve long‑term outcomes, helping children reach their full potential and improve their overall quality of life. It can also reduce the need for more intensive support later in life.

Our service ensures that children in Warrington, along with their parents and caregivers, receive timely treatment, advice and support tailored to their needs, helping them achieve the best possible future.

We offer face‑to‑face appointments, with occasional telephone appointments if required.

The service contributes to Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans and reviews for children and young people with additional needs.

How to access this service

This service is for children with developmental problems, neurodevelopmental difficulties or disabilities aged 0-16 years, or up to 19 years if they attend a special school.

Referrals can be made by health professionals, specialist teachers, educational specialists and the Complex Case Panel (CCP) via referral form.

Referral forms are sent to the Child Development Centre, where they are reviewed weekly by a multi‑professional, multi‑agency panel.

The service has a waiting list for first appointments and aims to see all children within 18 weeks of referral. Follow‑up appointments may be offered if a child or young person needs further review by a community paediatrician.

The service is based at the Child Development Centre (CDC), Sandy Lane, Orford, where clinics are also held.

Additional clinics are held at Bath Street Health and Wellbeing Centre, Grappenhall, Penketh and Woolston. Clinic sessions are also provided in some special schools for children with complex and multiple needs.
